London Golf Show 2008

April 22nd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Don’t forget, the London Golf Show starts this week.
Lee Westwood will be there on Friday 25th April to officially open the doors to the paying pringled punters. It’s over in the Excel Centre once more, complete with floating green, driving range, the Jack Rabbit Slim’s 100 ft putting contest, and some secret golf…somewhere.
Scanning down the exhibitor list, […]

My humps, my humps, my lovely landfill humps

December 29th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Some golf clubs have been remodelling the holes on their golf course by introducing ‘contouring’ and ’landscaping’ techniques to improve the look and playability of their courses - with the same unwarranted vigour as The Donald’s barber sculpts The World’s Greatest Quiff.
They cut back tees to lengthen their courses, create humps and dips around greens, deepen bunkers or dig out yet more bunkers, create water hazards and drainage ditches, and pile up mounds of […]

On the twelth day of Christmas

December 14th, 2007 · No Comments

My true love sent to me
Twelve golf balls gleaming
Eleven tees all nudey
Ten cardholders boring
Nine golf ball cleaners
Eight Tiger head covers
Seven pitch repairers
Six mits a-warming
Five Mis-cell-anies
Four golfing games
Three Pringle jumpers
Two um-ber-ellas
And a subscription to Setanta.
But after that, I’ll be lucky to get a satsuma and a smack in the kisser.

I love the smell of the tube in the morning

December 10th, 2007 · No Comments

Smells like Vicks. In the winter. And cheap perfume mixed with anxiety. Like bathing in someone else’s mid-life crisis.
This evening, however, I found myself subjected to the most objectional smell. A powerful odour of dog biscuits emanated from the young lady stood next to me. I glanced at her, whilst her back was turned, to see if she was […]

The Donald Knows Dunes

December 6th, 2007 · No Comments

The application by The Donald to build houses, a hotel, and a golf course on the land at Menie House, Balmedie has run aground. But only temporarily. This story is a real Gump, it just runs and runs.
The Formantine Area Committee of Aberdeenshire Council held a public meeting on 20 November 2007. At this meeting the application was approved by seven votes to four. A new […]

Severe Weather Warnings

November 12th, 2007 · No Comments

The Thames Flood Barrier has been raised, the sandbags have been piled high, and those with a sea view have been evacuated last week following warnings of storm surges and high tides.
It does seem to have passed largely without incident, however, localised downpours were torrential in places and had devasting consequences for those caught unprepared.

The Environment Agency […]

SAD

October 31st, 2007 · No Comments

The clocks have gone, and two days into winter time I’ve gone and got the SAD. Strangely Affected Disorder, or something. There’s a lot of it going around.
You know you’ve got it when you hear yourself say, ‘it’s dark at 4 o’clock now look’ and ‘the nights are creeping in’. Are they really? A bit bloody sinister […]

The good, the bad, and the ugly

October 25th, 2007 · No Comments

What makes a good hole of golf? During a lull in playing, this has been exercising what I laughingly refer to as my brain. Not much you understand. It’s got to compete with food and sex, and if Nigella’s on, both.
Anyway given frequent stabs at finding a criteria low enough to judge golf films and lame attempts to review golf courses, […]

Is this cool?

October 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

Stella MacCartney recently directed her models to wave golf clubs around in a mocked up driving range thrown together at the Westway Sports Centre. As part of London Fashion Week, MacCartney was showing off her range of running and gym wear for Adidas. No, I don’t understand either.
You can see why MacCartney chose golf for her […]
